How to Wake Up Without Waking Your Partner

How to Wake Up Without Waking Your Partner

If you and your partner get up at different times, one alarm usually wakes two people. Over weeks, that lost sleep adds up for the person who didn't need to be up. Here are six changes that help, from free to the one that fixes it properly.

1. Get the phone off the bedside table

A phone alarm has one job: to be loud enough to reach you. That means it's loud enough to reach anyone else in the room. Snoozing makes it worse, because your partner gets woken three or four times instead of once. If you keep using your phone, set one alarm and don't snooze.

2. Turn the volume down and the vibration on

Put the phone under your pillow on vibrate only. It's quieter, but a phone buzzing against a mattress is still surprisingly loud. It also means sleeping with your phone under your head.

3. Lay out everything the night before

Most of the noise after an early alarm isn't the alarm itself. It's drawers, wardrobe doors and hunting for keys in the dark. Put tomorrow's clothes, bag and keys outside the bedroom before you go to bed.

4. Use a dim light, not the main light

A small torch or a phone screen turned right down is enough to get out of the room. The overhead light wakes people even through closed eyes.

5. Swap sides of the bed

Whoever gets up first should sleep closest to the door. You won't climb over anyone, and you're out of the room in a few steps.

6. Switch to a silent alarm you wear

The only way an alarm wakes one person and not the other is if the other person can't hear it. That's what a wearable vibrating alarm does. It sits on your wrist and wakes you with vibration against your skin, and makes no sound at all.

The Sovune Nudge is built for exactly this:

  • Completely silent. There's no speaker in it, so there's nothing for your partner to hear.
  • It builds gradually. It starts as a gentle tap and steps up through three intensity levels over a full minute, so you're not jolted awake. You can switch it off sooner.
  • No phone in the bedroom. You set the alarm on the band itself. There's no app and nothing to pair.
  • It lasts about a fortnight. Up to 14 days of nightly use per charge.

Your partner would only know it went off if they happened to be touching your wrist at the time.

When it's your partner's alarm waking you

Sometimes you're the one being woken. If your partner's alarm goes off an hour before you need to be up, here's what helps:

  • Talk about it at a good moment, not at 5am. Most people don't realise how loud their alarm is for the other person.
  • Agree on one alarm, no snoozing. Three snoozes means three wake-ups for you.
  • Move their phone away from the bed. If they must use a phone alarm, a bedside table on their side, face down, is better than under a shared pillow.
  • Suggest a silent alarm they wear. It solves the problem at the source, and it makes a practical gift.
  • Earplugs and an eye mask help with the getting-ready noise and light, though they won't block a loud alarm.

A quiet morning exit routine

If you're the early riser, the alarm is only half of it. This routine gets you out of the room in under a minute:

  1. Night before: clothes, bag, keys and phone go outside the bedroom.
  2. Alarm: a silent vibrating alarm on your wrist. Switch it off as soon as you feel it.
  3. Light: no main light. Use a phone screen turned right down, or nothing at all.
  4. Exit: sleep on the side nearest the door so you're out in a few steps.
  5. Get ready elsewhere: dress and shower in another room, and close doors gently.

Quick answers

Will a vibrating alarm wake a heavy sleeper? Vibration against your skin is harder to sleep through than a sound across the room, and the Nudge escalates through three intensity levels over a full minute.

What if we both need to be up at different times? Each of you wears your own band set to your own time. Neither of you wakes the other.

Is it uncomfortable to sleep in? It's a soft, low-profile band. Most people stop noticing it by the second night. You can also wear it on your ankle.
