Garmin Vibration Alarm: How to Set a Silent Alarm on Your Watch

A Garmin vibration alarm buzzes your wrist instead of beeping, so you can get up early without waking the house. Most Garmin watches let you set alarms on the watch itself, and many let you choose how each alarm notifies you. This guide covers how to set an alarm on a Garmin watch, how to make it vibrate only, how do not disturb and sleep mode affect alarms, battery and comfort, and what to do if the vibration doesn't wake you.

The short answer: on your watch, open the alarm settings (often under Clocks or Alarm Clock), add an alarm, set the time and repeat days, then use the Sounds option to pick a vibration-only notification. Make sure device vibration is switched on in the system Sounds settings. Garmin's manuals say do not disturb mode turns off alerts and notifications but not alarms. Menu names vary a lot between Garmin models, so check the owner's manual for your exact watch.

How to set an alarm on a Garmin watch

Garmin makes many watch families, and the menus differ between them and between software versions. Two Garmin owner's manuals show the general pattern.

On a Forerunner 245 (source):

  1. From the watch face, hold UP.
  2. Select Alarm Clock, then Add Alarm.
  3. Select Time and enter the alarm time.
  4. Select Repeat and choose when the alarm should repeat (optional).
  5. Select Sounds and choose a type of notification (optional).
  6. Select Backlight and turn it on if you want the screen to light with the alarm.
  7. Select Label and choose a description (optional).

On a Venu (source):

  1. Hold the button to open the menu.
  2. Select Clocks, then Alarms, then Add Alarm.
  3. Select Time and enter a time.
  4. Select Repeat and choose an option.
  5. Select Label and choose a description.

Both manuals say you can set multiple alarms, each once or repeating. On newer watches the menus may be called something slightly different, so if you can't find them, search your model's owner's manual for "Setting an Alarm".

Making it vibrate only

On models with a Sounds option for each alarm, that's where you choose how the alarm notifies you. Pick the option that uses vibration without a tone. Then check the watch-wide setting:

  • Device vibration must be on. On the Forerunner 245, Garmin's manual puts this under Settings, System, Sounds, where you can turn Vibration on and off, as well as Key Tones, Alert Tones and Key Vibe.
  • Backlight. If you want a dark room, leave the alarm's Backlight option off where your model has one.
  • Test it. Set an alarm a few minutes ahead while you're awake and check it buzzes without a beep.
Setting Where to find it (varies by model) For a silent alarm
Alarm sound type In the alarm's own options, under Sounds Choose vibration only
Device vibration System settings, Sounds, Vibration On
Alert tones System settings, Sounds, Alert Tones Off if you want no beeps
Alarm backlight In the alarm's options, Backlight Off for a dark room
Do not disturb Controls menu or sleep settings Fine to leave on; alarms still work

Do not disturb and sleep mode

Many people turn on do not disturb at night so notifications don't buzz them awake at 2 am. Garmin's manuals say you can use do not disturb mode to turn off notifications and alerts, "with the exception of alarms". On the Forerunner 245, it turns off the backlight, tone alerts and vibration alerts, and you can turn on the Sleep Time option so the watch enters do not disturb automatically during your normal sleep hours. On the Venu, you can turn it on automatically through the Garmin Connect app under Sounds & Alerts, then Do Not Disturb During Sleep.

So you can silence everything else overnight and still be woken by your alarm. Newer Garmin watches may have a dedicated sleep mode with its own settings; check your manual for how it treats alarms.

Battery, comfort and other limits

A Garmin watch can be a very good silent alarm if you already wear one to bed. The practical limits:

  • Battery. Battery life depends on the features you use. The Venu manual, for example, lists up to 5 days in smartwatch mode with activity tracking and heart rate monitoring, and up to 7.5 hours with music playback. Keep enough charge to get through the night.
  • Charging time. If the watch charges overnight, it's not on your wrist. Pick a daytime charging slot.
  • Comfort. Some people find a sports watch bulky to sleep in. A softer band helps.
  • Vibration strength. Watch vibration is designed for notifications as well as alarms. If you're a deep sleeper, it may not be enough on its own. See do vibrating alarms work for heavy sleepers and vibrating alarm not waking me up.

If your Garmin alarm doesn't wake you

Try these in order:

  1. Check the alarm is turned on and set for the right days.
  2. Check device vibration is on in the system Sounds settings.
  3. Check the battery before bed.
  4. Wear it a little more snugly so the back of the watch sits against your skin.
  5. Add a second alarm a few minutes later as a backup while you learn how you respond. See how many alarms should you set.
  6. Consider a backup that doesn't depend on the watch, such as a phone set to vibrate-only. Our Android vibrate-only alarm and iPhone vibrate-only alarm guides cover the steps.

Where the Sovune Nudge fits

We make the Sovune Nudge, a silent alarm wristband, so we're not neutral. It's a dedicated alarm rather than a sports watch, which suits people who'd rather not sleep in their training watch.

  • Builds gradually. It starts as a gentle tap and builds through three intensity levels over a full minute, and you can switch it off sooner.
  • Up to 14 days of nightly use per charge, rechargeable via USB.
  • Water-resistant for everyday use, so showers and rain are fine, though not swimming or diving.

It comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
